Voxy Ladies: Go-Getters Helping Each Other And The VO Industry

NICE, FUN AND EASY! No, this is not an ad for a blind date, but a story about a tight-knit group of professional female voice over talents committed to each other and their industry.

Whoever coined the snarky phrase, “No good deed goes unpunished,” obviously never met the Voxy Ladies!

Defying the isolation so commonly affiliated with working in voice over, the Voxy Ladies are a collective of 25 professional female voice talents from all over the country who work collaboratively to help each other, their clients and the industry – while making a name for themselves by living by the Golden Rule.

“We are go-getters who want to not only forward our own careers but also who care deeply about each other and our industry,” explains Voxy Ladies founder Lisa Biggs. “We work together exchanging ideas, making referrals, supporting our members, planning fun industry events, and marketing ourselves as a whole.

“Twenty-five heads are better than one!”

EASIER FOR PRODUCERS

The Voxy Ladies are not only helpful to each other; but also make life easier for producers.

“It makes my job simpler. There is an element of speed with casting these days. Instead of sending individual audition emails, I just send one,” says Jim Kennelly, a strong supporter of women’s initiatives and owner of LOTAS Productions in New York City.
“The key to the Voxy Ladies is that they are professionals and offer a variety of styles,” Kennelly says. “There is not a weak link the group.”
KEEPING IT REAL
The Voxy Ladies are also making a name for themselves in the industry as a professional but fun group.
In March, they hand-delivered cupcakes to casting directors, producers and agencies, and they have sponsored industry events like bowling and karaoke parties attended by talents, casting directors, agents, etc.
“It’s not a self-serving group like so many are these days,” says Marc Graue (pictured), owner of The Legendary Marc Graue Studios in Los Angeles.”They have a good overall purpose, and the Voxy Ladies I’ve met all seem very sweet and genuine.”
EVENTS OPEN TO ALL
At this point, membership in the group is by invitation only, though events are open to anyone in the industry. Women are chosen based on professionalism, experience, work ethic, integrity and positive attitude.
Each member represents not only herself but also the Voxy Ladies brand, the original female voice over collective.
“The voice over industry is not for the faint of heart,” says Biggs. “It’s very personal and vulnerable to make a living using your voice, and the Voxy Ladies help each other through the journey, supporting and encouraging one another.
“Eventually, I’d love to expand, with large chapters of women connecting and moving forward as individuals and moving our entire industry forward because of our collaborative efforts.”
WALKING THE WALK, TALKING THE TALK
Ladies in the group, established in November 2011, have passed along clients, helped each other with branding, consulted on rate issues, and much more.
“I’ve done in six weeks what would take most people a year to achieve because of the help and support of the wonderful Voxy Ladies who live in LA,” says member Larissa Gallagher (pictured), who recently moved to the area. “I feel like I’ve landed on my feet because of them, and I’ll be eternally grateful for that.”
Through her involvement with the voice over sisterhood, Gallagher has also booked jobs, joined workout groups, and met casting directors and agents.
VOXY LADIES – THE BRAND
The group markets itself through events, creative promotions, and the website voxyladies.com, which has information about the collaboration, as well as links to individual profiles of members. The Voxy Ladies’ branding was based on a conversation Biggs had with fellow VO talent Brian Stevenson who told her, “Being good gets you in the door. Being cool keeps you in the room.”
She was also inspired by the cool factor of her dear friend Jen Davis, a voice and tattoo artist. (In photo, Lisa is on left, Jen at right.)
“The thing that impressed me about Jen when I first met her was how cool she was. She was the one whose lunch table you wanted to sit at, and people gravitate to that,” says Biggs, who has been tattooed nine times by Davis.”I want us to be in that room Brian Stevenson talked about,” Biggs adds. “I want us to be the cool girls that are not only great enough to be booked, but also cool enough that people want to hang out with us, and our branding reflects that.”
GET A SEAT AT COOL TABLE
While not everyone can be a Voxy Lady, the group is committed to finding new and fun ways to open up that lunch table to industry people across the country. The group’s events enable professionals to get together in a relaxed, casual environment free of demo pushers and VO vultures – events where people can have a great time together.
The success of the marketing efforts is evidenced by hits on the site, attendance at events, feedback from others, and the fact that women committed to helping each other and their industry back those efforts.
“The Voxy Ladies are professional and talented, but also just really nice women who will work our hardest for you, and we’ll all have fun doing it,” says Gallagher. “No divas allowed.”

Daddy I’m A Zombie

1 May

ImageVoxy Lady & veteran voice actor Katie Leigh and I were hanging out last night “talking shop” & Katie shared the trailer of a new project she work on directed by Voxy Lady fav, MJ Lallo. Daddy I’m a Zombie  is a story about the misadventures of a teenage girl in her new life as a zombie. As you can see, Katie’s character Piroska is almost as lovely as Katie herself! Well, minus the whole “hatchet in her head” thing.

If you love spooky stories & animation, I think you’re going to really enjoy this little gem! We’ll keep you updated as to its production progress! Until then, enjoy this trailer!

Nice Girls Finish First

22 Mar

Every other Sunday, Bel Air Presbyterian hosts a get together for folks in the entertainment industry. More specifically, people who desire to make a difference in the business of show business. Cassie Boyd & myself are regular attendees, and believe it or not we come for more than just the good food!

One particular week, we broke into small groups for discussion and found ourselves sharing a table with Cindy Osbrink. Cindy is one of the nicest ladies in Tinsel Town. As we were sharing with one another within our small group, Cindy shared a tidbit regarding her experience as an agent that Cassie & I found both encouraging & inspiring. She said that when she first started her agency, people discouraged her from being “too nice”. Warning her that her niceness would prove to be a hindrance in the success of her talent agency. That being said, Cindy never compromised her belief that it’s important to treat everyone the way we want to be treated & uphold the “Golden Rule” regardless of what others may do, say, or how they may respond.

Almost twenty years later, Osbrink Talent Agency is one of Hollywood’s most prestigious and respected talent agencies. The Youth side of Osbrink continues to be a powerhouse in the industry, representing many of the most visible talent in film, television, and voice overs.

Last week someone asked me, “what makes a Voxy Lady”? I rattled off the obvious traits; talent, personal & professional integrity and of course the ability to speak Ewok. Just kidding about that last one. Maybe. In my experience, treating everybody with unbiased kindness & respect has been an essential ingredient for success. As for the Voxy Ladies, following the “Golden Rule” continues to pave the way for us to move forward in our careers.

All that being said, gratitude is equally important as kindness, so thank you Cindy for allowing us to share your story! And thank you for your commitment to your beliefs & for proving that nice girls finish first!

Voxy Ladies Rock!

17 Jan

What’s better than one amazing voiceover girl?  A bunch of amazing Voiceover ladies!  Presenting…. VoxyLadies.com!  Check out their latest article below where they feature this website and the amazing women that came together to make it happen!  Keep on rockin’ Voxy Ladies!

EXTREME MAKEOVER WEBSITE EDITION

Recently we reached out to our favorite web designer, Denise Biondo after becoming aquainted with her through working with Celia Siegel.  Denise works very closely with Celia Siegel of CSM & VoiceGeek Micromanagement and has created some of our favorite VO sites. If you’re in the market for a website or a website makeover, Denise is the go to girl!

VL: Your websites are like works of art!! What is your design process when creating a website for a new client & how do you come up with such unique concepts?

DB: Thank you! Biondo Studio, which is composed of myself and my husband John was started in 2003 in Brooklyn and we are now located in Buffalo, N.Y. I really consider each website to be a collaboration between our studio and the client and it keeps the work interesting and fun because each client is unique and we bring that out in the design of each site. I work with many different types of people and businesses, but many of my sites are for voice over actors. This came about because about 7 or so years ago, I was contacted by the voice over manager Celia Siegel to create her website and then she began to outsource me to work with branding and design for some of the VO actors that she represents. The process begins with an outline submitted to me, based on Celia’s consultation with her client, working with her writer Marnie Lee to brand the best description of the voice and image, and then deciding how to present the whole package to those within the VO industry. From there, I like to have a phone conversation with the client to get to know a bit more about them personally and their likes and dislikes, and provide details about technical aspects of the site. Next, I write up an estimate and send it to the client and then if they decide to hire me, we go from there. The design process is the most time-consuming part because there’s a lot of thinking that goes into it, pushing and pulling of different ideas on the screen, research of different styles, etc. Sometimes I hit the nail on the head with the first sketch. Most times there’s a few revisions that have to be done to get it right, and on rare occasions I have to start over from scratch because I’ve got it all wrong, but even in that case, we usually get it back on track with the second revision and then move full-steam ahead. Most times there is a waiting period to get started on the design but once we have begun, I’d say that the process takes between 4 to 6 weeks.

VL: What are some success stories of your clients who have handed their websites over to you for a complete makeover?

DB: I’ve had several clients who have come to me and they were trying to get started in the VO business and then within a year they were doing VO full time. I also have many author clients who have said that their website really helped with the sales of their books. I create nicely designed tool for them to use to show off their talent, but their success also has to do with the business advice they’re following, the demos that they’ve recorded, and how hard they are working at promoting themselves. Someone could have the most elaborate and beautiful website, and if they don’t get themselves out there and use it, it would probably not get the results that they want. On the other hand, if they have something stylish and memorable that they are putting out there and people respond to it, they might not have to work quite as hard. We’ve all bought something because of the packaging: wine, books, perfume, etc. I’ve had people tell me that they knew they’d hire me immediately when they saw my page load in. Aesthetics definitely aren’t everything, but they’re an important piece of the puzzle.

VL: Obviously you’re more than a web designer, what other services do you offer through Biondo Studios??

DB: I’m excited about the tools that are about to come out to better create lightweight javascript and HTML5 sites. I have been known for flash sites with a matching default HTML page so that demos can be heard across all devices, but I also create blogger and WordPress templates, we video editing, graphic design, some packaging and printed materials. I don’t advertise this, but if anyone’s ever in Buffalo and wants to swing by the studio, we can create a delicious vegetarian meal for you and martinis made with herbs from the garden.

Denise is the designer behind Voxy Lady, Yeni Alvalez’s attention grabbing website! You can visit Yeni’s website here!
